What is the mission of Kearney Homeschool Co-op (KHC)?KHC exists to connect our homeschool community in a family learning environment for education, relationship, and fun.
-
Are you secular or Christian? We do not require any of our members to sign a Statement of Faith and encourage all interested homeschool families in the area to join our co-op. However, any member that serves on the Co-op Board must be a Christian. In addition, realize that we are meeting in a church facility, and we want to be respectful of our environment. Therefore, the board will keep such things in mind when approving classes and will not approve anything that our church facility would have issues with. We do believe the majority of our classes will simply be enrichment activities/classes with little to no Christian overtones.
-
When do you meet?We meet Thursdays from 9:30am-1:15pm for two 11-week semesters in the Fall and Spring. Usually Sep-Nov and Feb-May.
-
What classes do you offer? Our teachers are always coming up with great ideas, so classes change each semester, but here's a few we've offered in the past: Art, Watercolor, Graphic Design, Lego Construction, PE, Storytime, Science, Life After College, Game Time, Baking, Drama, Spanish, Athletic Conditioning, Party Planning, Sign Language, First Aid, Poetry, Newspaper, and so many more!
-
Do you do any additional fun stuff (beyond normal classes)?Yes, we do! Each year we have a Pumpkin Party in the Fall, Dress up days, Field Trips (outside of co-op days), Class Pictures, Yearbooks, Fall Formal (13+), Spring Graduation (8th and 12th grades), and our 11th week of each semester is Field Day!
-
What does your school day look like?Check-in is at 9:30am, followed by opening meeting at 9:45. We have 3 classes that are 45 minutes each + lunch. We wrap up the day and are usually done by 1:15pm.
-
Can we come to only one hour?As we only meet once/week, we require our students and adult volunteers to be present the whole day. We ask that appointments are scheduled OUTSIDE of co-op hours and missing an hour for any (non-emergency) reason will count as an unexcused absence.
-
What ages do you accept? We have students ages newborn-18. However, you must have at least one child age 5 or older registered in the co-op for the family to participate in the co-op. Children in classes besides the nursery class should be potty-trained. No one will go into the bathroom with your child, so if your child needs help, you will be found to help them.
-
Is this a drop-off program or are parents involved? We are 100% parent-led and run! One parent/guardian from each family is required to help with the co-op each semester. This participation is required in order to help our co-op run efficiently. Members may participate in many different ways. The board members will do their best to place members where they desire to be placed in order to help; however, realize that the needs of the co-op will ultimately determine what role/category each member participates in when helping.
-
I'm not available during the day, can I send my child with a grandparent or other family member?Yes! As long as the same adult is with your child(ren) each week, we welcome grandparents or another trusted adult.
-
What are adults expected to do while they are at the co-op?We have six different roles, and every adult participates in one or more of the following capacities: Teacher, Teacher Aide, Nursery Volunteer, Hall Monitor, Cleaning Crew, and/or Administrative Team. We take into account your talents, interests, and requests as much as we possibly can to match you with the role with which you are best suited!
-
Will I have to be a teacher my first semester with KHC?Unless you specifically request to be a teacher (there are perks!), we try to ease our new adults in by assigning easier roles your first semester with us.
-
What if we have to miss co-op?KHC requires participation from members in order to smoothly run each week. Therefore, each family will be allowed one unexcused absence during each semester, this will cover things such as family vacations. We understand that children and parents get sick, or family emergencies occur that are unplanned, and the Board, in its discretion, may count such events as excused absences. Students and parents/volunteers are expected to attend all day (all three class hours) of KHC in order to be counted as attending.
-
What if we are sick? Will we be penalized for missing class?Sickness happens! We understand. We operate much like public school where illness is concerned and ask that your sick child stays home for the day. We have a wellness policy we'd be happy to share if you'd like to know more.
-
What do we do for lunch?Students and parents bring their own lunch.
-
How much does it cost? Each semester each family will pay the following: Family Registration Fee of $80. This covers insurance and other expenses throughout the semester/year. (Due upon registering to join.) Student Fee: $25 per student for the first three students, then an additional $10 per student thereafter. Nursery children will also be counted as “students” for the purpose of semester fee calculations. (Due upon registering to join.) Class Fees: Some classes and the nursery may require additional fees for materials. These individual class fees/nursery fees will not exceed $15 per class, though most of our classes are in the $0-5 range. Class fees will be published when the class schedule is published. (Class fees will be due upon class registration; usually 2-4 weeks before the semester opens.)

What is a Homeschool
Co-op?
A homeschool co-op (short for cooperative) is a group of homeschooling families who meet regularly to share in the education of their children. A co-op relies on the participation of parents to exist. This is NOT a drop-off program, parents are expected to be on-site at all times, participating in all aspects of the homeschool cooperative program.
Kearney Homeschool Co-op (KHC) was founded in 2021 and is a Missouri based group of homeschooling families which meets Thursdays to facilitate enrichment classes for our kids.
